Lane Trail Students Recognized
July 28, 2010
Mr. McAlister and the students responsible for writing the legislation for the James Lane Freedom Trail in Jackson County were recognized tonight at the Kansas State Historical Museum. The students were honored at a reception hosted at the museum to kick off the four-day national conference about the underground railroad in Kansas. This conference, held at the Capital Plaza in Topeka, features several authors of books about the historical underground railroad.
The James Lane Freedom Trail sign was displayed during the reception, and some of the middle school students, staff and parents wore the t-shirts promoting the historical trail.
Diane Miller, National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom National Program Director with the National Parks Service, presented a certificate for each student in Mr. McAlister's class and a badge with the Underground Railroad Network to Freedom logo on it.
Jim Myer from the Farmers State Bank, which helped sponsor the reception, spoke and thanked the students for their efforts.
Parents, students, staff and administrators from Royal Valley attended the event.
