On the morning of November 7th, the FireKeepers Youth Council traveled to the Topeka Center for Advanced Learning and Careers for a conference. Students had the chance to wear their ribbon skirts or shirts and beaded jewelry. Lunch was provided by Chef Jason.
Sophomore Shownot Evans was one FYC member who attended the conference. She mentioned that the announcer, Bobby Von Martin, left an impression on her. Von Martin talked about his life and troubled childhood.
Evans said, “He met someone who had brought him and his cousins to the ceremony to be able to have a full meal. He felt so welcomed and they taught him about their culture. He expressed his feelings through art. I learned that if you have things going on at home, that doesn't mean you have to deal with those things when you grow up.”
