Elizabeth Hopkins, freshman, entered the Kansas History Day competition that was held on Saturday, Feb. 22, 2025. She took 3rd place in the senior individual exhibition division and will compete at State, which will be held at Seaman High School on Saturday April 22nd.
The topic for this year’s competition is "Rights and Responsibilities in History." Hopkins chose the Stonewall Riots because, “I thought it would be a controversial topic and it would bring a lot of things to discuss.”
Hopkins dedicated herself to her project, spending about 6 months on the research alone. She said, “putting a board together took about a month.” She presented her project to judges at Washburn University, and she says that until the State competition, she will continue working on the presentation part, “because that was pretty difficult for me.”
When asked what is one thing she wants people to know about the Stonewall Riots, Hopkins stated that while the Stonewall Riots inspired a movement toward equality for the LGBTQ+ community, the struggle isn’t over because the community “isn’t to 100% acceptance.”
Congratulations and good luck, Elizabeth!
